Tuberous Breast Deformity

Tuberous Breast Deformity

Tuberous Breast DeformityTuberous deformity of the breast is a common cause of breast asymmetry in Northern Virginia.  In this condition the tissues of the breasts are constricted with fibrous bands that prevent the breast from growing and assuming a natural shape. The shape and position of the nipple and the breast fold may be altered in women who have tuberous deformity making the breast seem smaller, constricted, and droopy. Tuberous deformity may affect one or both breasts. It can be a mild condition causing minimal changes in the breast shape, or a severe condition causing major shape differences and asymmetries. Correction of tuberous breast deformity requires a number of surgical maneuvers to release the constricting bands, lift the nipples to their natural position, and correct volume discrepancies between the breasts.

Shape and size differences between the breasts of women is normal and to be expected. These differences are usually minor and are not a source of great concern to most women. In certain individuals however, the difference may be significant enough to be noticed when the person is fully dressed. Asymmetries caused by tuberous deformity are present from puberty. However there may be other causes for asymmetry such as hormonal fluctuations due to pregnancy or acquired diseases such as breast cancer that may develop later in life. When these differences become very noticeable a woman may seek surgical options for correcting these problems.

Using a combination of procedures, Dr. Marefat can minimize the size and shape differences between the breasts of women living in Virginia and the Washington DC Metropolitan area.  Breast augmentation, breast reduction, and breast lift, and breast fat grafting procedures have all been used for correction of asymmetry. Tuberous deformities may require release of constricting bands, readjustment of breast fold position or shape, and release of skin attachments. Such operations not only enhance the aesthetic proportion of the patient's body, but also improve her self-esteem and psychological well-being. Combination procedures for the breast are becoming more prevalent as more surgeons are using shorter scars for lifting the breast at the time of breast enhancement. Modern breast implants are made with improved safety features that make leakage or rupture unlikely. Breast augmentation is still among the top five procedures done in the nation for cosmetic surgery.

The surgery for Tuberous deformity of the breast and breast asymmetry may be simple or complex depending on the nature of the problem. Usually it is performed in an ambulatory surgical center. The postoperative pain and discomfort are easily controlled with oral pain medication. The recovery time necessary for this procedure is about 1 week. Most people start exercising in the 3-4 weeks.
