Buttock Contouring and Augmentation

Buttock Contouring Virginia

Buttock contouring is a procedure designed to sculpt or enhance the shape of the buttock with the use of liposuction, fat grafting, or placement of implants. If the buttock size is adequate, liposuction can be used to sculpt the buttock into an ideal shape. If the buttock size is too small and augmentation is needed, fat grafting can be used to add volume to the buttock. The advantage of fat grafting over other cosmetic injectables is that the fat belongs to your own body, so you do not have the risk of having a reaction to a foreign substance. In some individuals, it is not possible to use fat for buttock augmentation. In such cases, a solid silicone implant is used for this purpose. A combination of procedures is sometimes needed to get an ideal result.

A combination of liposuction and fat grafting is often used to enhance the shape of the buttock. Fat grafting is the best way to augment a buttock that is deficient in size. It improves projection and lifts a sagging buttock. In those patients who do not have enough fat to donate for grafting, we have used buttock implants. Implants have the advantage of being very easily placed. However, they do not have the same feel as your own natural tissue. You can ask your Virginia plastic surgeon for more details concerning these procedures.

The liposuction is done through small puncture holes that are hidden in natural folds of the body. The incision can be as small as 1/8th of an inch. The area to be suctioned is then infiltrated with a solution containing medications that reduce bleeding and postoperative pain. The fat is removed from strategic areas of the buttock to bring out the ideal shape in much the same way as a sculptor would remove stone in order to bring forth the ideal shape hidden in the stone. If fat will be placed in the buttock, we first remove the appropriate amount of fat from your own body. This is usually taken from the abdomen or the back. The harvested fat is then processed for injection. With minute incisions, the fat is placed in the desired area. Injection amounts vary according to area and the amount of buttock augmentation needed. With the new techniques of fat grafting, most of the fat survives and gives long-lasting results. Sometimes, however, it may be necessary to reinject an area with more fat. If this is necessary, it can be done 2-3 months after the first procedure.

After buttock contouring surgery, you will have a moderate amount of drainage from the liposuction incisions. You will need to rest for the first 2-3 days, but most people are up and about shortly after surgery. The buttock may swell for 1-2 weeks after buttock contouring surgery. The amount of swelling varies according to the area injected and your own body's reaction to the fat graft. We generally recommend that our patients take off 10-14 days from work. Heavy lifting and exercising should be avoided in the first 2 weeks. Your body will tell you when you are ready to get back into your regular exercise routine.

What is buttock contouring and augmentation?

Buttock contouring is a procedure designed to sculpt or enhance the shape of the buttock using liposuction, fat grafting, or placement of implants. The advantage of fat grafting over other cosmetic injectables is that the fat belongs to your own body, so there is less risk of a negative reaction. It is not possible to use fat for buttock augmentation in some individuals. In such cases, a solid silicone implant is used for this purpose. A combination of procedures is sometimes needed to get the ideal result.

What does buttock contouring and augmentation accomplish?

Buttock contouring refers to a set of procedures for shaping or augmenting the buttock. With a combination of liposuction and fat grafting, virtually any area of the body can be sculpted into the desired shape. For example, if you want a fuller buttocks, fat can be placed in the buttocks to achieve that shape. One of the most common locations for fat grafting has been the buttock. If the buttock size is deficient, fat grafting can offer a more pleasing aesthetic shape. In patients who do not possess enough fat for grafting, we have used buttock implants. Implants have the advantage of being very easily placed. However, they do not have the same feel as your own natural tissue. You can ask Dr. Marefat for more details concerning these procedures.

How is buttock contouring and augmentation done?

In buttock contouring, liposuction is done through small puncture holes hidden by the body’s natural folds. The incision itself can be as small as 1/8th of an inch. The area to be suctioned is infiltrated with a solution that contains medicines that reduce bleeding and postoperative pain. The fat is removed from strategic areas of the buttock to bring out the ideal shape like a sculptor would remove stone to bring forth the ideal shape hidden within. When fat is being placed in the buttock, we first remove the necessary amount of fat from your body. This is usually removed from the abdomen or thighs. The harvested fat is then processed for injection. With the use of minute incisions, fat is placed in the desired area. The amount of fat injected varies accordingly to the area and degree of buttock augmentation desired. With new techniques used in fat grafting, most of the fat survives, producing long-lasting results. Sometimes, however, it may be necessary to reinject an area with more fat. If necessary, this can be done 2-3 months after the first procedure.

What can I expect after buttock contouring and augmentation surgery?

After buttock contouring surgery, you will have a moderate amount of drainage from the liposuction incisions. You will need to rest for the first 2-3 days, but most people are up and about shortly after surgery. The buttock may swell for 1-2 weeks after buttock contouring surgery. The swelling varies according to the area injected and your own body's reaction to the fat graft. We generally recommend that our patients take off 10-14 days from work. Heavy lifting and exercise should be avoided during the first 2 weeks. Your body will tell you when you are ready to get back into your regular exercise routine.

When are the buttock contouring and augmentation sutures removed?

There are very few sutures in buttock contouring procedures unless you are having an implant placed. Sutures usually come out in 1-2 weeks. Sometimes, you may have absorbable sutures that do not need to come out.

How many visits do I have after buttock contouring and augmentation in Virginia?

We like to see our patients frequently after surgery. You are seen by the doctor or nurse within 2-3 days of Virginia buttock contouring surgery. The normal postoperative routine is 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months. Of course, if there is a need, you may be seen more often. We encourage our patients to come in for routine follow-up visits every 3-5 years.

When can I wear makeup?

You should be able to wear makeup if you have had buttock contouring surgery. We do not recommend putting makeup on your incisions; this may result in tattooing of the skin by the pigments in the makeup.

Am I a good candidate for buttock contouring and augmentation surgery?

You are a good candidate for Virginia buttock contouring if you have areas that are suitable for liposuction and shaping and you possess donor sites for fat collection and fat grafting. If you are thin and do not possess donor sites for fat collection, you are a better candidate for buttock implants. Those who possess healthy skin tone, good overall health, and have realistic expectations are good candidates for most cosmetic procedures.

How do I pay for buttock contouring and augmentation in Virginia?

You can pay for buttock contouring surgery by certified check, credit card, or cash. Payment for cosmetic surgery is expected prior to any procedure. If you are scheduled for surgery several weeks in advance, you may pay by personal check.

Are there buttock contouring and augmentation scars?

Yes. However, these scars are very small (about 1/8th of an inch) and are usually hidden in areas of the body you would not normally see (e.g., belly button, pubic area). Each area of liposuction will, generally, have 1-2 small scars. If you are having an implant placed, the incisions will be hidden in your body’s natural folds. These incisions usually heal very well. After several months, these scars fade and are hardly visible.

Does buttock contouring and augmentation hurt?

The pain involved in buttock contouring procedures is very tolerable. We have heard our patients describe the pain as muscle aches and pains or just soreness. Many patients do not finish the pain medications prescribed to them for pain relief. Having said that, remember that pain is very subjective, and it is not easy to predict what degree of pain you will have.

Will I be awake during buttock contouring and augmentation?

If you are just having liposuction performed in a small area that can be done in the office, then you will be awake. However, if the area is large or you have multiple areas to be treated, you will most likely have the Virginia buttock contouring procedure in an outpatient facility under general anesthesia. If a large amount of fat is being grafted, it is preferable that you be asleep. Buttock implants are also performed under general anesthesia.

Where will the buttock contouring and augmentation surgery be performed in Virginia?

Buttock contouring surgery can be performed either in the office or the outpatient facility, depending on the size and number of areas to be treated. For example, if you have a small, localized area of fat in your hip, it is quite feasible to have this taken care of in the office under local anesthesia. On the other hand, if you want to have liposuction performed on the entire buttocks, then you are much more likely to have this procedure performed in the outpatient facility. We rarely see the need to perform Virginia buttock contouring procedures in a hospital setting anymore. Major fat grafting or implant augmentations are performed in an outpatient facility. Only in rare situations in which the patient may have risk factors does Dr. Marefat suggest surgery in a hospital environment.
